Steel vs Aluminium vs Composite: Choosing a Commercial Security Door

The material a commercial security door is built from decides how it performs for the next fifteen to twenty years: how well it resists a forced entry, whether it can also carry a fire rating, how often it needs maintenance and what it costs to keep in service. Specifiers usually come down to three options – steel, aluminium and composite. This guide sets out where each one earns its place, so you can match the material to the application rather than the other way round. 

Start With What the Door Has to Withstand 

A door performs to the limit of its weakest layer, so the material sets the ceiling on strength, fire performance, corrosion resistance and through-life cost. On commercial premises those factors sit alongside regulatory duties, insurer conditions and duty-of-care obligations that rarely apply to a domestic front door. 

Be specific about what the door protects before comparing materials. A high-traffic communal entrance in a residential block asks something different from a server room, a substation or a warehouse perimeter door. Threat level, environment and a realistic ten-year cost matter more than the purchase price on its own. 

Steel Security Doors

Steel is the default for serious commercial security, and the reasoning is straightforward. Heavy-gauge steel resists drilling, cutting and impact, and high-security doorsets tested to LPS 1175 hold an attacker off for a rated period measured in minutes rather than seconds. Those ratings carry weight with insurers, some of whom now ask for LPS 1175 SR3 or above on high-value premises and parts of the critical national infrastructure. 

Steel also takes a fire rating without a fight. Because the material is non-combustible, a single doorset can combine security with FD30, FD60 or higher fire performance – up to 240 minutes under the CERTIFIRE scheme. Specifying one door to do both jobs cuts the number of doorsets on a project and simplifies compliance with Approved Document B of the Building Regulations. 

The trade-off is weight. A fully specified [steel security doorset](https://www.securitydoorsdirect.co.uk/steel-security-doors/) is heavy, which drives the frame, hinge and closer specification and rules out some oversized single-leaf formats. Corrosion is a lesser concern: powder coating or galvanising handles most UK commercial environments, and [stainless steel doors](https://www.securitydoorsdirect.co.uk/stainless-steel-doors/) or marine-grade finishes cover coastal and chemically aggressive sites. Aluminium Security Doors

Aluminium has earned its place in commercial security glazing, where daylight and the look of the frontage are part of the brief. A well-made aluminium-framed glazed door with a multi-point locking system and laminated glass can meet PAS 24 and, in some builds, LPS 1175 SR1 or SR2. 

The practical gains are real. Aluminium is far lighter than steel at the same section, which eases installation, reduces wear on hinges and closers and makes large leaf formats workable. It resists corrosion by nature, so it needs less upkeep on exposed or coastal sites, and it anodises and powder-coats to almost any facade colour. 

The limits are just as clear. Aluminium is softer than steel and deforms sooner under a sustained attack, so anything needing SR3 or above points back to steel. High fire ratings are hard to reach in aluminium, because the metal loses strength at the temperatures a building fire reaches. Composite Security Doors

Composite doors combine materials, usually a solid timber or foam core clad in Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) or steel, to pair the warmth of a timber look with better durability and thermal performance. In commercial use they suit lower-risk openings: back-office and staff entrances, and [plant room doors](https://www.securitydoorsdirect.co.uk/plant-room-doors/) where weather resistance and insulation matter more than attack resistance. 

A well-specified composite door can meet PAS 24, and thermally broken constructions reach U-values around 1.2 W/m2K, which helps where energy performance is under scrutiny. GRP skins do not corrode and wipe clean, so maintenance stays low. 

The weakness shows when attack resistance is the point. GRP skins give way sooner than steel, and many composite cores offer limited resistance to sustained tool attack, so composite doors are rarely tested to LPS 1175 at SR2 or above. For high-value stock, sensitive data or public safety, treat composite as a secondary layer behind a steel perimeter rather than the primary defence.

How to Choose for Your Building

Start with the threat assessment and the insurer’s wording. If the policy calls for LPS 1175 SR2 or above, steel is the answer and the material question is settled. If the opening is a communal entrance or a lower-risk commercial access point, aluminium or composite may meet both the security brief and the budget. 

Position matters too. Doors on the perimeter, facing a street or car park, justify higher-rated steel. Internal openings behind a secure perimeter can often step down to a lower rating or composite, since the outer line already carries the load.
